Tiger Leaping Gorge

Situated in Hutiaoxia Town (Tiger Leaping Gorge Town), 96km from Shangri-la city and 80km from Lijiang town, Tiger Leaping Gorge originates from Jinsha River in Qinghai. It travels thousands of miles here and surges through the narrow cliffs formed by Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains, creating one of the most famous gorges in the Yangtze River. The name came from a legend that a ferocious tiger jumped over the river once.

Upper Gorge

Upper Gorge is located 9km from Hutiaoxia Town and it's a narrow section of the

Upper Gorge
whole gorge. The part nearby the Viewing Platform is less than 30m in width. In the center of the water lies a giant boulder in triangle shape dividing the water into two streams, forming deep waves. Legend has it that a tiger jumped from one side of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the side of Haba Snow Mountain with the help of the boulder. Therefore, the rock is called Tiger Leaping Stone. Upper Gorge was developed earlier. There is a plank road that runs down from the roadside to the riverside. It's pretty easy to walk.

Middle Gorge

Located about 8km from the Upper Gorge, the Middle Gorge is comparatively wide.

Middle Gorge
The water is wide open, but with many rapids. When the weather is pleasant, you will see a beautiful scene that sprays of water shimmers like stars when they clash the rocks. Thus, this sect of gorge is also referred as Mantianxing (Full of Stars). The fact is this part of the gorge is the most dangerous part. The road along the gorge is narrow, bumpy, and full of grotesque stones.

Lower Gorge

From the Middle Gorge forward, after passing the rockslide areas, is a vast stretch of river. Water tends to be gentle. It's like a huge water reservoir. This is Lower Gorge. In the far, there is a large piece of rice paddles and villages. From here, Daju county of Lijiang is reachable.

Beautiful Legend

Master Mu, the ruler of Lijiang in ancient times, had a bunch of talents recruited, and there was one person who was particularly good at fortune-telling. Master Mu was told that he will be rich in his early years but die miserably without a coffin. Master Mu was shocked, and he ordered one coffin to be placed every 10 miles wherever he went. On a pleasant day, Master Mu was in a good mood, and he mounted his tiger to Jinsha River. The river was roaring, and the landscape was just beautiful. When they came to the narrow section of the gorge, the tiger took a big leap and landed on the other side of the river. Unfortunately, Master Mu fell into the river. Therefore, people call the place Tiger Leaping Gorge.
